How to remove Asbestos safely?
What is
Asbestos and the fuss?
Asbestos is the generic term for a
number of fibrous silicate minerals. Products made from asbestos
cement - bonded asbestos material -- include fibro sheeting
(flat and corrugated) as well as water, drainage and flue pipes,
roofing shingles and guttering.
Breathing in asbestos
fibres can cause asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. It is
a serious stuff so handle with care, don't risk it...
How can I find professional to
remove them?
You can find the licensed asbestos
removal contractors in your area through
Yellow
Pages.
How you can remove asbestos (DIY) in
a safe manner?
For small amount of asbestos cladding (less than 50m2), you can
DIY with care, or else leave them to the expert, it is not worth
the risk for you and your family.
1. Order a abestos bin from your local asbestos removalists. One
is Tottenham, Apex 9314 9911
2. Avoid use of power tools. Asbestos fibres can be released if
power tools are used for anything other than the removal of
screws.
3. Wear an Australian Standards Protection Level 2 (P2) minimum
half face disposable mask and disposable coveralls. Ask your
local Bunning store. Non-Australian Standards certified masks
should not be used where asbestos is present.
4. Wet sheets down to reduce dust generation and movement.
5. Take the sheets off whole (again, do not use power tools as
this may create dust movement).
6. Double wrap the sheets in construction grade plastic. (This
should be 200 microns thick.) Use tough tape to seal the
package. The package size and weight should be small enough to
be handle by 2 person only.
Another option, if you would like to transport to the disposal
yourself, Contact your Local
Council for a licensed disposal point in your area.
The approximate cost of asbestos bin is about 3 (three) times
your usual rubbish bin. So the cost is not as bad as a lot of
people fear, and took the risk... on themself, and the
environment.
Enjoy your DIY project, We hope that you don't have to call
for help when it is too late.
